** If your baby is not in the optimal position, we will gladly repeat the scan in the next two weeks at no additional charge. We cannot guarantee that all patients will receive vivid, clear face pictures due to fetal position and maternal body type.
**Please note that elective ultrasounds do not replace the full anatomic diagnostic ultrasounds that your doctor or midwife recommend. These limited diagnostic ultrasounds are performed by a licensed sonographer and are limited to noting fetal number, baby’s position, baby’s gender, and the presence of a fetal heartbeat. We require that all pregnant women seeking elective ultrasounds be receiving prenatal care from a healthcare provider. If your doctor is not in our office, we require written consent from your healthcare provider prior to performing your ultrasound. Although there are no confirmed biological effects on patients caused by exposures from present diagnostic ultrasound instruments, the possibility exists that such biological effects may be identified in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions Below, you will find answers to many common questions regarding our elective prenatal ultrasounds. If you have additional questions please contact our office at 402-463-6793 or visit obgynnebraska.com. What is an elective prenatal ultrasound? An elective ultrasound is performed during the pregnancy for a non-medical reason. They are typically done to provide expectant mothers with additional pictures and videos of her new baby as he or she grows during the pregnancy. This can aid in the bonding process for the new mother and her family. These scans are not part of the routine prenatal care and are not covered by insurance. Does this ultrasound take the place of a diagnostic, medical ultrasound ordered by my doctor or midwife? No. This ultrasound is not to be used in place of a complete diagnostic ultrasound. Women seeking an elective prenatal ultrasound must already be receiving prenatal care with another healthcare provider and have already received a medical, diagnostic ultrasound to confirm their due date and screen for problems with the baby and the pregnancy. Our elective ultrasounds are limited to confirming the heartbeat, the number of babies, and the position of the baby. Is it safe? Ultrasound has been used for over 30 years and extensive studies have shown it to be safe for mother and baby. Routine scanning of all pregnancies is done throughout the United States. 3D and 4D ultrasounds utilize sound waves to look inside the body. This is the same type and intensity of ultrasound as is used in conventional 2D scanning. As with many things, although there are no confirmed effects on patients caused by exposure from present day diagnostic ultrasounds instruments, the possibility exists that such biological effects may be identified in the future. When is the ideal time to have a 3D/4D ultrasound? You can receive excellent images of your baby throughout the pregnancy. Several factors will affect the images including the gestational age, position of the baby, and the amniotic fluid level. We have many packages to choose from so you can select the option that best fits your needs. As a general rule, gender can be checked as early as 16 weeks. Vivid face pictures are best obtained between 26 and 32 weeks. However, most mothers enjoy seeing images of their baby at many stages throughout the pregnancy as changes take place very rapidly. What is the difference between 2D, 3D and 4D ultrasound? 2D ultrasound is the traditional black and white picture you see when having a regular ultrasound. 3D images are the color STILL images you see of the baby in the womb at that moment. 4D ultrasoundallows you to see your baby moving in color. Most of our packages allow you to receive 3D color pictures of your baby and a 4D video recording on a DVD.
Will I always get a beautiful image of my baby? We understand that you want crisp and clear images of your baby and we do too. Many factors can affect this including the baby’s position, activity, fluid level, and maternal body type. Some days your baby may be in a position that does not allow for ideal pictures. If this happens, we will gladly repeat your scan in the next two weeks at no additional charge and your baby is likely to be in a better position. Unfortunately, not all mothers are able to receive vivid, clear pictures of their baby. We will do our best to get excellent pictures of your baby, but we cannot guarantee that your little one will cooperate and you may not receive the face pictures that you were hoping to see. Are you able to tell the sex of the baby? We can determine the gender of the baby in most patients after 16 weeks. If your baby is not in the optimal position, we welcome you to return for a repeat scan in the next two weeks at no additional charge. For those parents planning a gender revealing party, we can provide the results in a sealed envelope. Can I bring guests? Absolutely! Your family and children are welcome to attend your ultrasound. This is a fun and exciting time for your family and we want you to share this with them. Our room can comfortably accommodate multiple family members. For those who can’t make it, you will receive a DVD recording of your session to view in the comfort of your home later.
Do I need an appointment? Yes. Appointments can be made at times convenient for you and can be coordinated around your existing prenatal appointments with advance notice. Is this covered by insurance? Elective ultrasounds are not covered by insurance since this is a non-diagnostic exam. It is an out of pocket expense. We accept cash or credit cards. Payment is due prior to performing the ultrasound.
